Mary Hall

I woke up early one December morning with the basic words to this song in my head, though with the name Lucille Ball rather than Mary Hall.  I have no idea where it came from, other than news items about so many prominent sexual abusers.  Since i found it depressing , i tried to forget it.  The next morning, the same thing occurred.  This time i decided i needed to write it down to get it out of my head.  So i got up (it was about 6:15a), went to my computer and typed it in.  It took less than a half hour for the complete words and a simple tune.

I initially sang it in public twice, once at an OOAK open mic, and once at a “Poets under the Maples” evening.  At the latter event i explicitly asked whether i should continue to sing it, since i didn’t know whether women would find it offensive.  I got no comments at all (with the exception of Susan Scoggins a few days later, who described it as a very powerful song, perhaps not suitable for audiences with children).

It was in my set list for my mini-concert at Maples on 28 December 2017, but i substituted another song for it.  However, it has now stewed sufficiently that i will sing it in public again — maybe even at the Dispensary.  Definitely a “blacks”.

P.S.  I did play the song at the Dispensary.  A month or so before, i had planned to do it the next time i played at the Dispensary.  As it happens when i did play it, it was just after the Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings (though i didn’t consciously think about that).  I got a literal thumbs-down from one member of the audience!  I guess it just shows how horribly divided the country is that someone can be offended by an anti-sexual-assault song.
