After reading the book of interviews Songwriters on Songwriting, and most of its sequel, i was struck by the relatively large proportion of songwriters who first worked out the music, and then went on to write the lyrics of their songs. Although i had adapted someone else’s melody for one of my songs (e.g., all of my parodylans), i had never worked out a melody of my own and then put words to it. So i tried that with this song.
I first noodled around on my concertina until i found a pretty nice melody. Then i listened to the melody to see if it would bring a topic to my mind. It did! It sounded like one of the old British songs about a woman waiting for a lover to come back from the sea.
Although it does not exactly fit into my “Humorous Songs” category, it does have a bit of a twist at the end that one can view as humorous.
