Hey There

Although political songs are fun to write, they typically have a short shelf life; consequently, i usually stop singing them when they become irrelevant.  However, about half of the verses of this one as originally written are still relevant, so i decided to discard the out-of-date verses and replace them with currently applicable ones.  Follow the lyrics link below, and you will see the song as it currently exists, at least lyrically.  (I haven’t yet completely updated the audio.)

The first verse of this song will have complete meaning only for regular readers of the Readers’ Forum in the Yancey Common Times Journal, the local paper in Burnsville, NC.  Bucky Cochrane is a regular contributor there, usually droning on about how there is no global warming, with occasional forays into political or other technical topics, and occasional bouts of personal invective.  I’ve replied to his letters on several occasions.  (You can see some of these replies in the Essay section of this website.)

For this song, i woke up on 7 July 2017 with most of the first verse in my head, and went to the computer room to start writing it down.  All but three of the original verses were done in less than an hour, although i broke in the middle to go to Maples to pick up a sound system that we were borrowing for the talk at the High Cove Gathering.  I added the “alt-right thugs” verse two days later, and the last two verses at the end of the month.  I later revised the verse about Donald Trump, and revised it again in bringing the song up to date.

It was a fun song for me to write and i quite enjoy singing it.  As you can see, the format makes it relatively easy to add verses.  Although i’ve been tempted to write verses for Mitch McConnell and Ted Cruz (both of whom i particularly loathe) and Lindsey Graham, so far i’ve only been motivated to write one for McConnell.

P.S. I modified this one yet again, putting in verses about Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Ron DeSantis, Red States, and Washington Democrats.  But i rarely sing it now — occasionally at the Dispensary.  The recorded audio is no longer up to date, but it does allow one to hear the melody.  I’ve used some of the words in my more recent song, “Wake Up”.
