When i first started this song, i wrote it to be sung to the tune of John Denver’s “Back Home Again”. It also had a very sarcastic refrain. Some verses in, though, i decided to make up my own tune for it. Also, because my experience has been that my sarcasm tends to pass most people by without having any impact, i decided to change the refrain to make it more straight forward. The song was written over a many month period as the war evolved, first in Afghanistan, and then on into Iraq. I never really finished it; i guess because the wars have never finished. The song just sort of petered out as i focussed on other things.
The annotations in the second column on the lyrics page explain some of the more subtle pieces of the song. I believe that the song is a truthful account; i exaggerated very little in writing it.
Rather than lose the melody as the song became more irrelevant, i adapted it to another of my songs — “A Place in My Heart”.
